Every major wave of automation has produced the same debate: will machines replace human workers, or will they free workers to do something better? The Luddite movement smashed textile machinery in 1811 believing mechanisation would destroy skilled craftswork. They were right, in the short term — many weavers were ruined. They were wrong in the long term — the industrial revolution created far more jobs than it destroyed, though often miserable ones in very different places.
