Ageing is not inevitable in the way we tend to assume. It is a biological process — one that evolution has shaped and that, in principle, can be interfered with. Some species barely age at all: the naked mole rat lives ten times longer than similar-sized rodents and shows almost no increase in mortality risk with age. The Greenland shark may live for 400 years. Hydra, a tiny aquatic animal, appears to be biologically immortal. Ageing is not written into the laws of physics; it is a feature of certain biological strategies, not all of them.
