Quantum mechanics is the most precisely tested theory in the history of science, yet its implications for reality remain deeply contested. It describes a world where particles do not have definite properties until measured, where objects can be in multiple states simultaneously, and where two particles can be correlated across any distance. These features work — quantum mechanics underlies transistors, lasers, and MRI machines — but what they mean about the fundamental nature of reality is genuinely strange.

The double-slit experiment reveals the strangeness vividly. Fire electrons one at a time through two slits at a screen. You would expect two bands of impact marks. Instead, you get an interference pattern — bands of light and dark as if each electron went through both slits simultaneously as a wave. But if you add a detector to record which slit the electron goes through, the interference pattern vanishes and you get two bands — as if the electron "knew" it was being watched and behaved like a particle. Observation changes the result.

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle states that you cannot simultaneously know both the exact position and exact momentum of a particle. The more precisely you measure one, the more uncertain the other becomes. This is not a limitation of our instruments — it is a fundamental feature of quantum reality. Particles do not have definite position and momentum at the same time; these properties only become definite through the act of measurement. The universe at the quantum scale is irreducibly probabilistic.

Quantum mechanics underlies all modern electronics, lasers, and medical imaging. Its philosophical implications about the nature of reality, observation, and determinism remain among the most contested questions in physics and philosophy.
